Making any text on a website readalbe is very very important. Without readable text, most websites would be useless, or very difficult to navigate. The main purpose of websites is to provide information or service, and the best way to communicate these things is with text.
Text on web sites should follow the same rules that it would in newspapers, books, and other texts. It should be spelled correctly, follow normal conventions, and use colors and styles that are easy to read. Try to avoid flashy or distracting styles for larger blocks of text. As a general rule, if it's meant to be looked at, it can have plenty of fancy styles. But if it's meant to be read, then it needs to be easy on the eyes.
Web-specific features need to be well defined. Buttons and links should be visualy distinct from other words on the page so that users can find them, and not question their function. Information about the site needs to be provided in a clear way, so that users with problems or questions can get help.
Lastly, there must be a way to communicate important inforamtion to those that may not be able to read what text is on the page. This can be users that read another language, or have difficulty seeing. Methods to communicate would include pictures that convey or clarify information, visual instructions, or directions to a web site that can accomidate them.
This site has been set up in a way that is readable, as far as I have the resources to do so. Here are some other sites:
